In Bhagavad Gita, Viswa Guru Bhagaw¿n Sri Krishna mentions about Ved¿s and Upanishads on many instants during HIS epic teaching on the philosophy of life. In one of the verses in S¿nkhya yoga, HE says, ‘those who are obsessed by desires, who look upon heaven as the supreme goal and argue that there is nothing beyond heaven and pleasures and who are devoted to the letter of the Ved¿s are unwise’.On a superficial reading of this inscription, a commoner like the author might fall prey to the misunderstanding that ‘following the Ved¿s’ needs to be shunned.In Purushothamapr¿pti Yoga, Bhagaw¿n proclaims, ‘I am indeed That which has to be known by all the Ved¿s; I am indeed the author of the Ved¿nta and the knower of the Ved¿s am I’. Here, we understand that HE is known through Ved¿s only.These two statements about Ved¿s, when juxtaposed, may leave an ignorant soul with an obscure understanding of the true reality. However, the truth is simple, transparent and not at all that opaque. As an author of Ved¿s, HE provided the key also, to know the Ultimate Reality in the form of Ved¿nt¿s also known as Upanishads. Ved¿nt¿s enshrine within themselves the divine face of the Vedic thought, i.e, the doctrine of highest wisdom about Param¿tma, the God Almighty as against that portion dedicated to karma k¿nda or the ritualistic part of Ved¿s. Those, who are obsessed by desires and who go after the ritualistic practices or worships, never experience tranquility and they remain discontented. So, ‘following these ephemeral pursuits in this short and impermanent but precious human life’ should be shunned by ignorant souls. This is the absolute truth.
